Sunning Diapers

Sun in Michigan is something that cloth diaper families get really excited about. We don't see a whole lot of it in the winter months, and we love to take advantage of it when we can. Your cloth diapers will eventually have stains on them even though you have thoroughly cleaned them. The sun is great at removing stains from cloth diapers, or anything really. A few hours in the sun will get back to looking new.

Line Drying Cloth Diapers

Here in Michigan, it can get pretty humid outside.  As a busy mom, I do everything I can to cut down the dry time on my diapers.  Watch this video to see some great tips!

The biggest complaint of line drying is that diapers may turn "stiff" or "crunchy."  You can throw them in the dryer for a few minutes to help soften them up. You won't need to do a full dry cycle.  Three to five minutes should be plenty.

Make the Switch to Cloth Wipes

If you are using cloth diapers, it really makes sense to use cloth wipes.  With disposable diapers, when you use disposable wipes, care givers tend to put the wipes into the diaper, roll the diaper up, and throw everything away.

If you use disposable wipes with cloth diapers, chances are you'll end up putting the disposable wipe into the cloth diaper and throwing the diaper into your diaper pail or wet bag.  This means that the wipes will end up in your washing machine.  Disposable wipes tend to get tangled up in the aplix (velcro like closures on cloth diapers).  If you do remember to not put your wipe in your diaper, you're left with the problem of needing to dispose of the wipe in a different place than your diaper.

There are a lot of other benefits to using cloth wipes.

  •  Cloth wipes create less solid waste than disposable wipes. Babies go through 7,000 - 9,000 diaper changes from birth to potty training.  If you use two wipes per change (and let’s be honest…how many people can really only use two wipes on a major poop explosion), we’re looking at over 14,000 - 18,000 wipes. Picture all that in your local landfill!
  • Cloth wipes work better than flimsy disposable wipes.  Cloth wipes really grab the mess – making it much easier to clean up.  We recommend having 1-2 cloth wipes for every diaper change you have.  With cloth wipes, you should hardly ever need more than one to finish the job.
  • Cloth wipes do not contain harmful chemicals like disposable wipes.  Often when parents are at the end of their ropes battling diaper rash, they find that their baby actually has a reaction to the chemicals in cloth wipes.  A simple switch to cloth wipes and the rash goes away. (For more on the chemicals in disposable wipes, read this post)
  • Cloth Wipes will save you more money.  Depending on the brand of disposables wipes, and the numbers used to come up with the figures, you can expect to save $120 - $500 per child.

Cloth Diaper Insert, Soakers, and Doublers

We don't spend a lot of time talking about doublers in Buns Boot Camp.  This is because for most babies, the inserts that come with the diapers offer enough absorbency.  If you find that you have a baby who is a heavy wetter and need extra absorbency, the terminology can get confusing.

Cloth Diaper Inserts are layers of absorbent fabric, such as microfiber or cotton, that are used to provide the sole absorbency in diapers.  They are usually sewn into a rectangular shape, although some or sewn into a specific shape to fit a certain brand or style.  All of the pocket diapers that EcoBuns carries come with their own inserts.  Inserts that you can buy separately include Best Bottom Inserts and Flip Stay Dry Inserts

Cloth Diaper Soakers are absorbant pieces of material that are either sewn into a diaper, or snap into an All in Two diaper system.  The terms inserts and doublers are often used interchangeably, although inserts usually refer to a pocket diaper, while soakers usually refer to an All in One or All in Two diaper.  The Grovia AI2 systems uses soakers.

Cloth Diaper Doublers are meant to serve as additional absorbency in a cloth diaper and should not be used alone.  Doublers (sometimes referred to as boosters) are great to use for overnight, nap time, long car rides, and sitters.  Thirsties Fab Doublers are a very popular option.  Thirsties Hemp is most often used as a doubler for at night time (even though it has the word insert in it's name, we recommend it only be used as a doubler).
